Southern Sun wins best hotel in Nigeria award
Southern Sun Ikoyi Hotel in Lagos in Nigeria has won the award for Nigeria's Most Outstanding Hotel Facility of the Year 2010. The inaugural Nigerian Hospitality Excellence Awards ceremony was part of a one-day seminar held at the Sheraton Hotel & Towers Ikeja.
The 195-room Southern Sun Ikoyi in Lagos, Nigeria, opened on 15 May 2009 and offers the business and leisure traveller value-for-money accommodation within the city district. GM is Mark Loxley.
The Nigerian Hospitality Excellence Awards and Seminar (NIHEAS) 2010 South West Zone was held for the first time last week ago to encourage service excellence in the rapidly growing hospitality industry in Nigeria.
The event, to be held annually, was hosted by Finale Hotels Services Limited in conjunction with Focal Point and endorsed by the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation. This year's theme was Globalisation: challenges of the hospitality and tourism industry in Nigeria.
Speakers at the seminar included Pierre-Alain Bignalet of Sofitel The Moorehouse Ikoyi, Mark Loxley of Southern Sun Ikoyi Hotel Lagos and Dr Olusola Aina of Human Capital Management Consultants and chairman of Finale Hotel Services Limited.
Topics discussed included hospitality and tourism potential in Nigeria; global best practices; systematic accounting and control techniques in hotel and catering management; safety and dynamics of security in the hospitality industry; investing in the hospitality business: challenges and the way forward; and hospitality marketing, branding and public relations.
Awards were made in the following categories: Hotels/motels and guesthouses; fast food and restaurants outlets; tour operators; and airline operators, land transport operators and courier service operators.
