Africa’s most modern brewery opens near Johannesburg
Two years after two of Brandhouse's shareholders Heineken and Diageo announced that they would build a new brewery in the Sedibeng area between Vereeniging and Alberton, south of Johannesburg, the facility was officially opened last week.
Commenting on the announcement at the time, Heineken's regional president for Africa and Middle East, Tom de Man said: "The location of the brewery was a difficult decision based on far more than just geology, geography and infrastructure. We are also very aware that southern Johannesburg is an area that will benefit enormously from new commercial investment, which will in turn assist and enable social and economic progress in the whole area. We, our partners Diageo and our local joint venture business, Brandhouse consider ourselves part of that process."
The Sedibeng brewery site on the R59 covers 83 hectares. The brewery itself will have an initial capacity of three - million hectolitres, with the built-in flexibility to expand. It will brew a range of Heineken and Diageo brands including Heineken and Amstel.
The 70 000 m2 brewery comprises production buildings and cool cellars, as well as a bottling and distribution warehouse for Sedibeng Brewery Pty (Ltd) (previously known as Heineken Supply Co (Pty) Ltd), the brewing and distribution company for Amstel.
The buildings at the brewery are generally concrete, structural steel and brick structures, with steel roof sheeting on all buildings. Some 30 000 cubic metres of concrete were be used in the project, together with 3 500 tons of structural steel and more than two - million bricks.
A fast-track construction programme saw the new brewery completed ahead of schedule. Brandhouse says the Sedibeng brewery is the fastest built and most technologically advanced in Africa.
