New hotel grading system to be launched soon
New grading criteria for hotels and other tourist accommodation establishments are to be introduced in October.
The Tourism Grading Council has released details of its plans for the grading of tourism establishments and, after "extensive consultation with stakeholders", is now requesting final input.
The Minister of Tourism, Marthinus van Schalkwyk, has appointed a new awards committee under the chairmanship of Peter Bacon, one of the South Africa's most respected hoteliers. The new awards committee is looking forward to the launch of the new grading criteria into the market by 1 October 2010.
The TGCSA contracted KPMG to conduct an extensive study on the application of the current grading criteria. The brief to KPMG was to benchmark the South African grading criteria against international standards of quality grading. They were to advise the TGCSA on whether the South African grading criteria were complying with international quality assurance standards and whether it was being implemented correctly.
The TGCSA, together with KPMG embarked on a wide consultation process which included other international tourism grading authorities. A further consultation was carried out via an e-survey.
The TGCSA is planning to share all the input received and has released documents to stakeholders which reflect the results of the consultation process.
Feedback has been requested by March 26 and meetings are to be held at a number of venues. Details can be obtained from the TGCSA.
